At the end of the 19th century, Mr. Federico Jensch transformed the magnificent Palazzo Giustiniani, formerly the bishop’s residence located on the left side of the Gromolo river mouth, into a splendid hotel: today’s Grande Albergo, a 4-star hotel in Sestri Levante.
Overlooking the sea, the hotel — originally open year-round and chosen by the finest international clientele — offered almost regal hospitality.
It originally featured 130 elegantly furnished rooms equipped with every comfort: elevator, heating, telephone, sea-view terraces, private beach, boats, beach services, garage, and a library of Italian and foreign books, with carriages available for guests.
The hotel was also renowned for its excellent cuisine, using the finest ingredients, especially from the fertile plains of Sestri Levante.
In 1930, the hotel was the headquarters of the first Barcarolata Orientale, a picturesque event still held annually in the Baia del Silenzio on the last Sunday of July.
After being owned by the Westermann family for thirty years, the hotel passed to its current owners in the 1990s and, in July 2003, following a complete renovation, the Grande Albergo reopened its doors, welcoming guests in luxury and elegance.
